States’ Financial Disclosure: As Expected, Florida Ranks Low
by Hanly on Jun.25, 2009, under Politics
Yesterday, the Center for Public Integrity released the results of a survey comparing their legislative financial disclosure requirements. It is a shame that in the recent push for transparency in government, 20 states managed to fail receiving an F rating. I honestly expected Florida to be one of those states, however we managed a D, which is by no means good. The highest ranked state was Louisiana, which is probably due to the aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina, and all of the funding that had to go into the state for recovery efforts. The previous two studies conducted in 1999 and 2006 had Louisiana in 44th place. That’s a great turnaround.

Things to do Back Home
by Hanly on May.10, 2009, under Miami
There are many things that I’ve never done in Miami. Maybe it was because I figured that since I lived there, it wasn’t such a big deal or anything, but now that I spend most of the year in Wisconsin I kind of see Miami a bit differently. I see it more like a tourist now. When I go back this summer I want to take advantage of my time and do some of the things that I never did while living there. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
- Visit Florida State Capitol — (In the 14 years I’ve lived in Florida I’ve never been to the state capitol, yet I’ve been to the Wisconsin state capitol)
- Go snorkeling in Dry Tortugas
- Visit Key West (Yup, never made it all the way down the keys…)
- Visit Vizcaya (So close to home, yet I’ve never taken the tour)
- Go to the Everglades (It’s been a long time since my last visit back in 6th grade)
- Go to the Coral Castle ( I think it’d be interesting to see it)
- Go to the Olympia Theater ( I was there last year for the International Film Festival, but I’d like to take the tour and get some pictures)
- Visit Liberty Tower (I drive by it all the time, but I’ve never been inside it)
A Very Eventful Yesterday
by Hanly on May.03, 2009, under The Wisconsin Experience
Yesterday was Mifflin day (the day the Mifflin Block Party) is held. I woke up around 9:45-ish to go to the farmer’s market down in capitol square, with Mike, Mady, and Erica. I was expecting to buy some fresh fruit to eat, but that didn’t happen. Apparently its Spring, and well fruit just aren’t ready in the actual spring. That is to say, that in Florida we are accustomed to having freshly grown fruit year round because of the warm temperatures, hence not experiencing 4 seasons, or spring for that matter. Anyways, there was a lot of honey, jams, and freshly baked goods. I couldn’t contain my craving and had to get a humongous cinnamon roll. The farmer’s market is a big deal around here, there are young and old alike, set to the floral spring background that accentuates the capitol building. After the farmer’s market we stopped by Jamba Juice. This was my first time getting anything there since I usually opt for the unhealthy frapuchinos at the conveniently close Starbucks that seem to be established near jamba juices back home. I opted for an original sized Strawberry Whirl with a Calcium power boost. We all joked around a bit how they should offer a $20 Tamiflu power boost to combat against Swine Flu, since Erica’s brother had been tested positive for it and her entire family was under voluntary quarantine and taking Tamiflu. On our way back we saw Ryan biking to Mifflin.
Wish I were Home
by Hanly on Mar.12, 2009, under Miami, Uncategorized
These past couple of days I’ve been wishing I were home basking in the great Florida sunshine, instead of being up here dealing with the Wisconsin cold. Tomorrow after 11:00 AM, when my last class for the day ends, spring break begins however, for me it is more of the same. I wish I were going home, but in all honesty one week worth of sunshine is not nearly enough for me to spend upwards of $300 to fly home. Especially when all I have to do is bear it out for the remaining half of the semester. Thinking of home, I couldn’t help but play “Welcome to Miami” by Will Smith, since it is the song that plays in my head as I debark the plane and exit the terminal into the warm, sunny, and azure sky filled city that has been my home for nearly 14 years. I never thought I would be thinking this, but I miss Miami. After wanting to leave it for years, now that I have, I actually miss it.
